OpenAI Expands ChatGPT with E-Commerce Features, Partnering with Shopify and Etsy

OpenAI has launched a new checkout feature for ChatGPT, enabling users to purchase products directly through the chat interface. Over one million Shopify merchants, including major brands like Skims and Glossier, are expected to join the platform soon. The announcement spurred a 5% rise in stock prices for both Shopify and Etsy.

The MOVE marks OpenAI's latest effort to monetize its AI tools, collecting fees from transactions processed via ChatGPT. Despite heavy investments in infrastructure, the company has yet to achieve profitability. Contract terms with Shopify and Etsy remain confidential, though OpenAI confirms no additional costs will be passed to consumers.

Michelle Fradin, head of ChatGPT commerce at OpenAI, emphasized the platform's evolving role: "Our vision for ChatGPT is not just providing information but helping users accomplish real-world tasks." Future updates will introduce multi-item carts and expand the feature globally.

This development follows OpenAI's April integration of product recommendations into its search tools, prioritizing relevance over paid placements. The expansion into e-commerce underscores the growing convergence of AI and digital retail.
